(Harrisburg) — A Berks County Catholic school principal and his wife are facing charges for allegedly funneling thousands in donations into an account for personal use over an eight-year period.

Detectives say as principal of Saint Francis Academy in Bally, Thomas Murphy collected cash and checks for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allentown.

They allege Murphy deposited the funds, earmarked for school business, into a checking account only he had access to.

Murphy and his wife Ann both had credit cards linked to the account.

The Berks County District Attorney’s office says the couple stole $150,000 from the diocese between January 2010 and July 2018.

The couple face charges including theft by deception, receiving stolen property, and conspiracy.
