(Harrisburg) — Two midstate precious metals dealers are facing criminal charges for failing to document sales.

State law requires a copy of every transaction record be sent to a county district attorney when a precious metals purchase is made.

York County DA Dave Sunday said James Zimmerman of Zimmerman Jewelers and Dennis Steinmetz of Steinmetz Coins and Currency have rarely followed the law since at least January of this year.

Data shows since February, Zimmerman’s Jewelers had a 37 percent compliance rate, while Steinmetz Coins and Currency had a 17 percent compliance rate.

Sunday said the reported information is invaluable in helping police solve drug and property crimes and return stolen property.

He noted his office has invested significant time and money to create a web-based reporting system for precious metal dealers. The program covers York and Lebanon counties and is expanding to Cumberland County.
